My first Deacons Encounter
Joining the firm as a Vacation Student
I chose Deacons primarily because of its commitment on professional development. As a full-service law firm with top-tier professionals in a wide array of practice areas, Deacons provides trainees with an unparalleled opportunity to gain exposure in different areas of legal practice.
Trainees are constantly involved in top quality cases and projects, which enable us to acquire the necessary skills and attributes in handling complex scenarios. Understanding the challenges that fresh graduates may face, our partners and the graduate recruitment team are always here to provide concrete and timely guidance.

Deacons is special in having a collaborative and friendly culture – which requires far more than an “open-door policy”. From experience sharing chats to various activities organised by the Deacons Social Circle, our team-oriented culture is the fruit of a long-term collective effort from everyone in the firm. Committed to becoming part of this tradition, I co-organised the Trainee Team Building in my first year of traineeship – our annual teambuilding event for current and future trainees – with three batchmates in which participants allocated into different roles worked in collaboration to complete our Deacons’ City.
Deacons left a lasting impression on me when I first joined the firm as a vacation student. Aside from substantive work which I was assigned, the graduate recruitment team designed a wide range of activities through which I learnt that being a lawyer requires more than merely excelling at work. Notably, the award-winning ABCs of Law event reminded me that we are part of the community before we are lawyers, and we should give back to the society which enabled us to flourish.
Making decision solely based on law firms’ promotional materials could be hard, and is definitely not desirable. To make an informed assessment of your fit with different law firms, the key is either to experience the firms yourself, or at least reach out to people who may give you insights on their experience. Therefore, if you are interested in pursuing a legal career with Deacons, do participate in our firm’s (physical or virtual) open houses and career talks; and more importantly, do apply to be a vacation student here!
